Kehinde Wiley (b. 1977 in Los Angeles, USA) lives and works in New York, USA andBeijing, China. He has already achieved international recognition for his highlynaturalistic paintings of contemporary urban men adopting heroic poses directly referencing classical portraiture. 'The 'World Stage’, Wiley's vast and celebrated body of work, has previously focused on Brazil, China, Israel, Nigeria, Senegal and Sri Lanka,with exhibitions held in museums and galleries in Europe and the USA. Wiley engages the signs and visual rhetoric of the heroic, powerful, majestic, and sublime in hisrepresentation of urban black and brown men and women found throughout the world.His most recent ‘World Stage’ project was hosted in Jamaica and produced new work for his first solo exhibition at Stephen Friedman Gallery, London, England, featuring both black men and women assuming poses taken from 17th and 18th Century Britishportraiture.
By applying the visual vocabulary and conventions of glorification, wealth, prestige, and history to subject matter drawn from the urban fabric, Wiley makes his subjects and their stylistic references juxtaposed inversions of each other, forcing ambiguity and provocative perplexity to pervade his imagery.
Kehinde Wiley received his MFA from Yale University in 2001. Shortly after, he becamean Artist-in-Residence at the Studio Museum in Harlem.
